Business analysts examine a business activity to help decide whether new IT solutions will improve productivity. They discuss existing business models and the flows of data in the business with those involved.

The job role of a business analyst involves playing a major part in the systems development life cycle (SDLC), which includes a business idea, business cases, planning, delivery, testing, implementation and close out. Using a variety of technical and presentation tools, analysts draw up and specify costs for possible improvements and produce outline designs of new IT systems for others to develop and build. They will specify logical operations the system will perform as well as the way data will be viewed by the user.

Most business analysts work with a specific type of system, which varies with the type of organisation. There is no one way to become a Business Analyst, however having some of the following qualifications will help:

  • University degree in a computer science or related field
  • University degree in Engineering or related field
  • Experiance as a engineer or programmer
  • Business to Business integrations
  • Data Modelling
  • Usability Testing
